AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Set of 12 sepia-toned heliogravures, in oblong or vertical format, 31 x 24 cm, pulled with white margins on strong paper. The studio monogram and sometimes a number appear on the plate.

Associated with Tunis in 1904, photographer Rudolf Franz Lehnert (1878-1948), born in Bohemia, and the Saxon Ernst Heinrich Landrock (1878-1966), responsible for the edition, formed one of the most widely circulated photographic fonds on the Maghreb, Egypt and the Near East. Their production, with pictorialist aesthetics, circulated broadly as postcards and heliogravures, before and after the studio’s establishment in Cairo in 1924.

The set brings together four Saharan views and eight portraits.

The Saharan views are the following:

- the collective prayer in rows in a palm grove (no. 2230);
- the prayer of a meharist at the crest of a dune, near his mount (2245);
- a camel driver and his dromedary on the dunes (no. 2084);
- a caravan skirting the crest of an erg (2265).

The portraits are the following:

- a young woman seen in profile with large hoop earrings, after a painting by Emile-Auguste Pinchart;
- a female nude seated at the edge of a pool, in front of a house with a gallery (no. 2247);
- two young girls adorned with jasmine (no. 2006);
- a young woman wearing a turban, viewed from behind, shoulder exposed (no. 2024);
- a young girl with a painted jug, wearing a necklace and earrings (no. 2150);
- an old man in prayer, hands raised (no. 2133);
- a Black woman leaning on an elbow in a niche with a two-tone arched backdrop, near a jar;
- an elderly Jewish man reading, wearing the prayer shawl, tefillin on the arm (no. 2059).

Good overall condition. Slight wear, some foxing and small marginal stains, as well as a scuff on one print, a crease and other minor defects.

Better preserved than the postcards of the house, Lehnert & Landrock heliogravures offer deep blacks and a modeling close to the silver print. The set documents the Tunisian and Algerian Sahara, Muslim and Jewish religious practices, and the Orientalist imagery of studio-posed portraits.
