Pair of altar candlesticks or torches in a baluster form, made of brass and finished in gilt, in antique Baroque style from Italy (Calabria), dating to 1930–1940, each 45 cm high with an 8 cm upper ring diameter and a 10 cm base width, total weight about 5 kg, in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
Pair of altar candle holders (or torches) with a baluster shaft. Era: Late 17th century / Early 18th century (full Baroque period / Louis XIV era).
Style: Tuscan-Roman Baroque. The lively, exuberant line, combined with the incorporation of religious figurative elements, reflects the dictates of the Counter-Reformation and the theatrical aesthetics of Italian Baroque.
Description of decoration: The baluster shaft runs vertically, alternating smooth swellings with richly decorated sections. The focal element is the central globular node, from which emerge three winged cherub heads in high relief. The structure terminates at the top with a molded drip dish (salvacera) ornamented, provided with a socket for the lamp stem. Stability is guaranteed by a monumental tripod (or trilobed) base that repeats on the three corners additional angel faces, ending in scroll-shaped feet.
Dimensions of each candlestick:
- height 45 cm,
- upper ring diameter 8 cm,
- base width 10 cm
The total weight of the pair is approximately 5 kg.
