Duché de Holstein - Copper engraving with period colouring by Henricus Hondius, a map of the Duchy of Holstein and southern Schleswig published in the 1633 French edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas, Denmark, sheet size 56 x 47.5 cm (the plate 46.9 x 35.3 cm), in good condition with minor defects.
Description from the seller
An antique copper-engraved map, hand-tinted, of the Duchy of Holstein by Hondius, published in 1633 in the Mercator-Hondius atlas.
It shows Holstein and the southern part of Schleswig, from the Elbe to the Baltic, with Hamburg, Lübeck and Kiel.
Two framed maps appear at the top: the polder of Aenwas near Detzbul and the lakes of Barmer, Megger and Noortstapeler.
The North Sea is detailed with its sandbanks, soundings, and buoys, listed in a legend. A sailing boat and two wind roses enliven it, and a third adorns the Baltic. Heligoland, Nordstrand, Eiderstedt, Fehmarn and Als are depicted.
The title is in a cartouche at the top, and the scales in German and French miles are in a cartouche at the bottom left.
- Dimensions: sheet: 56 x 47.5 cm; plate (map): 46.9 x 35.3 cm
- Condition: Generally good for a map of this period. There is a vertical central fold, two small holes in the upper margin, and light stains. See photos for more details.
