Description from the seller
A pair of Chinese bronze elephant-form candle holders, probably late Qing dynasty early Republic 20th century. Nice gilted patine superbe condition
This impressive pair of Chinese bronze candle holders is modelled as elephants standing on stepped circular pedestal bases. Each elephant supports a distinctive square, architectural candle socket on its back.
The sculptures are executed in dark patinated bronze, with extensive surface texture imitating the wrinkled skin of the elephants. The trunks are elegantly curved downward, while the ears, legs, tails and facial features are carefully modelled.
The bases are composed of several rounded and stepped elements. The undersides retain the original cast finish, including a characteristic cross-hatched tooling pattern.
The warm brown and black patina shows areas of natural wear and lighter copper-coloured highlights, giving the pair a particularly aged appearance.
