Oromo Ethiopian war shield, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. Authentic piece, in its original condition, with no restoration.
The shield is circular and domed, made of thick hard leather. Its entire surface is decorated with concentric bands engraved, consisting of parallel lines, chevrons and hatchings radiating from the center. This very regular geometric decoration is typical of shields from the region. The rim is reinforced by a rolled leather edge, pierced with small stitching holes. The center bears a round boss.
On the back, a curved handle of rawhide is held by the original leather straps. The back shows a beautiful patina from use, with signs of handling.
Dimensions: diameter 53 cm, thickness about 2 cm and height 14 cm.
