Antique Circa 1740 - 1780 Devotional Art
S.Walburga Abbatissa Holy Walburga as Abbess
S. Walburga Abbatissa (the Holy Walburga, Abbess) was an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon Benedictine nun, abbess and missionary. She, along with her family, played a crucial role in the Christianization of Germany under the leadership of Saint Boniface.
Biography in brief
• Origin: Born around 710 in Wessex, England, as daughter of Saint King Richard of Wessex. She was sister of the holy brothers Willibald and Winebald (Wunibald), and niece of Boniface.
• Mission: She left around 748 for the European mainland to aid evangelization.
• Abbess: She became abbess of the double monastery of Heidenheim (inhabited by both monks and nuns), where she assumed overall leadership after the death of her brother Winebald.
• Death: She died on 25 February 779 in Heidenheim.
