Description from the seller
Mundus Budapest Art Nouveau Chair, ca. 1907–1914
Antique chair made of curved wood, manufactured by Mundus in Budapest, presumably from the early 20th century, circa 1907–1914. The chair is executed in the characteristic bentwood technique and has curved legs and three decorative rails in the backrest.
What is special is the circular wooden seat, which features a richly stylized decorative motif with floral and curling elements, in keeping with Art Nouveau/Jugendstil.
On the underside is an original paper factory label with the text “MUNDUS BUDAPEST” and “BEJEGYZETT VÉDJEGY” (registered trademark).
Mundus was an important producer of bentwood furniture within the Austro-Hungarian furniture industry. The company was founded in 1907 and merged in 1914 with J. & J. Kohn. In 1922/1923 it merged with Gebrüder Thonet, forming the large Thonet-Mundus group. This chair, however, bears the original Mundus Budapest label and thus is presumably from before this merger.
The chair is in used antique condition with a lovely, authentic patina. The wood shows signs of age and use, including scratches, wear, and localized loss of the original finish. The factory label is damaged but still clearly recognizable and legible. The chair has not been recently restored and thus retains an authentic appearance.
Style: Art Nouveau / Jugendstil
Technique: bentwood / Bugholz
Material: wood, presumably beechwood
Origin: Budapest, Hungary
Period: ca. 1907–1914
Manufacturer: Mundus
Carefully packed in recycled materials and insured for shipping.
