Six-piece Grand Tour indivisible creamware set by Giustiniani of Naples, dating to the first half of the 19th century, comprising one oval serving dish and five ruched-edge circular plates hand-painted with Etruscan-inspired motifs, stamped I N / BG on the back, in excellent condition with signs of use and minor wear.
Description from the seller
Exceptional and very rare indivisible Grand Tour set of fine creamware, from the prestigious Giustiniani workshop (Naples, Italy), dated to the first half of the 19th century (Early 19th Century).
The lot consists of 6 pieces in total: one large oval serving dish and five circular, deep plates with ruffled rims, hand-decorated meticulously with Etruscan motifs (Etruscan Revival). Its design reproduces the aesthetics of ancient Greek black-figure ceramics on a light background, alternating pigments in black, white, and terracotta (rust red) with geometric friezes and palmettes. This type of luxury pieces were commissioned by European aristocracy during their Grand Tour travels, inspired by the archaeological fever of Pompeii and Herculaneum excavations.
Marks and Authenticity:
Each piece bears on the reverse ceramic paste stamps, highlighting the Giustiniani marks in Naples (I N / BG), which absolutely guarantees its authenticity and 19th-century origin.
Condition:
Condition in keeping with its two-hundred-year age, with evident signs of use and the passage of time. It shows small nicks, surface chipping and occasional losses on the wavy edges of some pieces, as well as wear and slight losses in the paint or surface glaze in specific areas. It also displays the characteristic natural historic crazing in the glaze on the reverses. All of it is detailed in the accompanying photographic report.
Dimensions and Weights:
Round plates (5 units): Diameter 20.5 cm | Height 3 cm | Individual weights between 222 g and 255 g.
Oval serving dish (1 unit): Length 28 cm | Width 15.5 cm | Height 4 cm | Weight 387 g.
