Description from the seller
Mali Wedding Beads – Fulani bridal beads necklace
These special colorful beads are known as Mali Wedding Beads or Fulani Wedding Beads.
The glass beads were originally manufactured in Bohemia, present-day Czech Republic, specifically for trade with Africa. Through trade routes they made their way to West Africa, where they became particularly beloved in Mali. The Bead Chest
The characteristic drop- or lamp-shaped beads became strongly associated with the Fulani (Fula). They were worn at festive and ceremonial occasions and are nowadays often referred to in trade as “bridal beads.” There are various stories about the exact marriage tradition: one describes beads being passed from mother to daughter at a wedding, but also that such beads were worn at wedding feasts.
What is notable is that the beads were not made of glass in Africa itself. It is precisely the combination of European glassmaking and the later West African usage history that makes them interesting as African trade beads. The various colors, stripes, marbled patterns and shapes make almost every old strand unique.
Age and rarity: These specimens (beads) are from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They come from an old collection. Be sure to also view my other items. They show nice wear and patina on the beads. Some are fitted with a new clasp and/or re-strung more securely.
Old original necklaces/beads are collectible objects.
