Description from the seller
Rare Cotton Flemish Damask Tablecloth with 6 Napkins (Late 1800s / Early 1900s) - Jacquard weaving and loom selvage edges
Splendid and intact vintage dinner service for 6 people, datable between 1890 and 1910. The set consists of a tablecloth and 6 coordinating napkins in fine white cotton damask. The ensemble stands out for a very refined Jacquard-woven texture with a geometric and floral damask motif in a checked pattern. The play of glossy/matte contrasts creates an elegant raised visual effect depending on the light. A highly valuable lot for collectors of antique textiles, characterized by construction details of another era.
Technical specifications and historical dating:
• Type: Antique damask tablecloth with 6 large napkins
• Era: Late 19th century / Early 20th century (circa 1890-1910)
• Material: 100% heavyweight white cotton damask
• Weave: Jacquard-woven damask with geometric-floral motifs
• Manufacture and Edges: The edges of the tablecloth and napkins feature the classic loom selvage on two sides (a typical feature of the late 1800s when the fabric left the loom finished and did not require a hem because it prevented fraying). The other sides are finished with a simple, hand-stitched hem, whose millimetric and fascinating differences in the stitches attest to the artisanal authenticity.
• Napkin details: The napkins are particularly large (62 x 58 cm), a generous cut typical and exclusive of noble ensembles from the late 19th century. They bear the same identical damask decoration as the tablecloth.
• Total weight of the lot: 1190 grams (dense fabric, substantial and of excellent quality)
Measurements:
Conditions of the item: excellent vintage/antique condition. The fabric is structurally solid, healthy and retains its original luster. No stains, tears or later restorations are reported. An impeccably preserved piece of Italian linen history.
