AI-assisted summary
Description from the seller
For sale is a fascinating set of two rare antique mechanical toy bears (automatons) from the early 20th century (possibly late 19th century). This type of automaton toy is highly sought after by collectors of historical toys and curiosities worldwide.
A four-legged running bear with dark real fur/natural fur covering. It has characteristic carved wooden paws with visible claws, a meticulously crafted mouth with inserted teeth and a tongue, and glass eyes. When wound up, the bear runs and moves its head.
Condition: Played with, fur loss. Not functioning well. About 20 cm long
A standing/sitting bear with lighter fur, holding a gong (or a cymbal) in its paws. On the head there is a mechanical device (chain/wire). With a movement mechanism to play the musical instrument. By pressing the lever, the bear opens the cymbals.
Condition: Good to very good preserved
Both figures stand on sturdy, classic papier-mâché or wooden bases beneath the fur, as was common for high-quality French and German automata of that era.
Visual condition: age-appropriate original antique condition. The fur shows age-related gaps/wear that emphasize the authentic character and patina of this historical toy. Please examine the photos closely for details.
An exceptional ensemble for collectors of mechanical antique toys, automatons, and Steiff-era curiosities.
