Description from the seller
Iconic Zip-Light table lamp by Sigmar Willnauer
Original packaged, never assembled!
For sale is a genuine design rarity from the 90s: the "Zip-Light Junior" (height approx. 30 cm), designed by Sigmar Willnauer for the Italian manufacturer Naos. This lamp has been included in the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).
It consists of two vertically interlocking elements. The lamp impresses with an unconventional material mix. It is made from a base of robust saddle leather and a foldable lampshade made of plastic. The emblematic element is a long, functional zipper (Zip) that runs along the leather body. The shade also gains its shape through a zipper. Because of its distinctive silhouette, which resembles the headpiece of a nun, the model is colloquially nicknamed "The Nun" or in Italian "Monaca". (There is, in addition to the offered Junior model, a larger version of about 55 cm in height.)
The absolute highlight: The lamp is in pristine, new-old-stock condition (NOS). It has never been assembled, and the plastic elements have therefore never been bent. It comes completely untouched in the original packaging/designer bag. Perfect for collectors and museums seeking a flawless original without any UV yellowing or signs of use. Unused originals are extremely rare.
Back then, the lamp was sold in a flat designer bag with a carrying handle (similar to an artist’s portfolio). This packaging is itself part of Sigmar Willnauer’s design concept and is often exhibited with pieces in museums. The packaging offered here also has never been exposed to daylight and is therefore in its original color. In the front lower shell there is a slight crease caused by the thick lamp socket (see photo cable).
Attention: the last photo shows what the assembled lamp looks like. This is a photo from the internet, not the original packaged specimen offered here!
Designer Sigmar Willnauer worked, among other things, in the USA at frogdesign and was involved in the design of early Apple Macintosh products before he was appointed professor of product design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd in 1997.
