A ceramic horse titled Keramische paard from China, in the Sancai glaze technique typical of late Tang style, dating to the late 20th century, signed and original, 33 cm high by 30 cm wide, with provenance from a gallery/antique dealer.
Description from the seller
The Sancai technique: The term Sancai (三彩) literally means "three colors." It refers to the distinctive glaze technique that uses lead glaze in mainly honey-brown/amber, green, and cream or straw-yellow colors. During firing, the glaze flows spontaneously, creating the characteristic streaks and droplets. Historical function: In the Tang dynasty, these earthen figures were not made for the living; they served as mingqi (grave goods). They were buried in the tombs of the elite and the imperial family to bestow status, wealth, and protection on the deceased in the afterlife. Symbolism of the horse: Horses were precious prestige objects in ancient China, indispensable for the army and trade via the Silk Road. They symbolized strength, power, wealth, and aristocratic status.
