Original 19th‑century historical set dedicated to Général de Charette (1832–1911), comprising three autograph letters signed by Charette with their original, franked envelopes and a large original photograph of seven Zouaves pontificaux mounted on carton by G. Berthault, Angers, with dimensions 11 × 16.5 cm, in Excellent condition and authenticated as Original/officiel, without a certificate of authenticity.
Description from the seller
A fine 19th-century historical collection devoted to Athanase de Charette de La Contrie (1832-1911), a French officer, former commander of the Pontifical Zouaves and then of the Legion of the Western Volunteers.
The collection comprises:
– 3 autograph letters from Monsieur de Charette, written and signed in his own hand, accompanied by their original franked envelopes. The letters are addressed to Monsieur de Vaubernier, in Laval (Mayenne).
– Several postmarks are visible on the envelopes, notably from the year 1876.
The letters comprise several handwritten pages and present real historical and documentary interest. They are not merely signatures or calling cards: some letters contain extended text concerning people, events, and news of the time.
The signatures of Charette are clearly visible.
– A large original antique photograph depicting a group of seven men in Pontifical Zouave uniforms.
The photograph is mounted on cardboard bearing the photographer’s mark:
G. Berthault, photographer
10, place du Ralliement
Angers
An old handwritten inscription also appears at the bottom of the photograph.
Approximate dimensions of the photograph/cardboard:
11 × 16.5 cm.
This photograph constitutes a particularly interesting complement to Charette’s letters, due to its direct association with the world of the Pontifical Zouaves and the French Catholic volunteers of the 19th century.
