Description from the seller

Set of 4 antique Dutch wall tiles – animal motifs – ca. 1650–1700

Special lot of four antique Dutch tin-glazed wall tiles from the second half of the 17th century, ca. 1650–1700, hand-painted in cobalt blue.

The tiles show four different animal motifs, painted in the characteristic blue-and-white tradition of Dutch tile production. The subjects are individually hand-executed and display appealing variations in line work, brushstroke, and the intensity of the cobalt blue.

All four tiles feature characteristic blue corner ornaments of the oxhead type, giving the quartet, despite the different subjects, a strong, cohesive whole.

The traditional manufacturing is clearly visible in the irregularities of the tin glaze, the craquelure, firing pits, and local surface variations. The unglazed backs have a rough, irregular texture and show old mortar and mounting traces. The edges and thickness also show natural variations typical of manually produced historical tiles.
