Description from the seller

France, 18th/19th century

Polychrome wooden figure of a nun or female saint
Carved and painted wood
Approx. 30 cm high

A highly decorative devotional figure representing a nun or female saint, carved in wood and retaining extensive historic polychromy.

The figure is shown standing in a long red robe with a dark green mantle and a white veil or wimple covering the head and shoulders. The restrained pose, elongated proportions and simplified facial features are characteristic of provincial devotional sculpture produced for domestic chapels, convents and local churches.

The exact identity of the figure is uncertain. No clear surviving attribute allows a secure identification, although the veil and monastic dress suggest that she may represent a nun saint or female religious figure.

Dating

The sculpture dates, in our opinion, from the 18th or 19th century.

The carving, construction, old polychromy and general wear are consistent with historic devotional use. The somewhat simplified execution suggests a provincial or folk-art context rather than academic sculpture.

Material and polychromy

Carved wood with historic painted decoration.

The surface retains attractive old layers of red, green, white polychromy, with extensive natural wear, losses and rubbing that give the figure a strong and authentic historic appearance.

A hole in the underside indicates the figure may originally have been attached to a base or incorporated into a larger devotional setting.

Dimensions

Height: approximately 30 cm

Condition

Authentic historic condition with visible age-related wear.

There are losses to the polychromy, rubbing, small chips and abrasions throughout. The lower section shows wear and minor losses consistent with age and handling.

No recent restoration has been undertaken by us.

Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description.

Shipping

The figure will be carefully and securely packed for transport.
