Large antique hand-carved wooden wall console dating from around 1880, in Neogothic historicist style, originating from France, with dimensions 33 cm high, 30 cm wide and 25 cm deep, made of wood and in good solid antique condition with signs of aging and spots.
Description from the seller
Large antique hand-carved wooden wall console with Chimera / Sphinx - Neo-Gothic - circa 1880.
A very expressive and high-quality hand-carved wooden wall console (corbel/applique) from the late 19th century (historicist / neogothic period, circa 1880).
This impressive architectural ornament shows a mythological female sphinx or chimera with a very strongly carved, roaring lion head and outstretched tongue, clearly recognizable as a Gothic gargoyle. The mythical beast is equipped with detailed wings and the body transitions at the bottom into realistically worked claws resting on an elegant volute (scroll).
The reverse side is in its completely original, unfinished state and shows the authentic 19th-century artisanal construction, including the two original wrought-iron mounting strips anchored with the old antique slotted screws. The console has a splendid, deep and warm patina.
Dimensions:
Height: 33 cm
Width: 30 cm
Depth: 25 cm
Condition Report:
In good, solid antique condition with normal signs of age and a beautiful natural patina. The wood shows a few historical woodworm holes on the back and inner side; however, the item has been fully professionally treated. No restorations or later alterations.
