Description from the seller

Beautiful and large Fon ceremonial scepters from Benin. They represent Shango / Hevioso, the god of thunder and war. It is a powerful and formidable deity. It is depicted here as a woman, raising in the air her double-edged axe. Her axe is simplified and stylized; it is a symbol of his power. A child-like figure sits at its center. A serpent adorns the face and a gecko on its back. The overall piece is beautiful and harmonious. There is a soft yet powerful presence emanating from this work. It is a special, captivating and mysterious object that draws us into the dreamlike and magical world of Vodou culture. Beautiful old patina. Cracks and blemishes visible in the photos, it is solid, sold as is. A beautiful old and authentic collectible piece with personality. Circa 1950.

Provenance:
- Private collection, Germany.
