AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Circa 1890. Cristallerie Legras & Cie / Montjoye at Saint-Denis. France

Splendid rare baluster vase model « Calcutta » with a wavy collar, hot-worked, with an opacified base in the famous "Vert Antique" mass-dyed glaze, featuring an enameled decoration of charming wild orchids in bloom and buds, very delicately hand-painted, surrounded by fine gold tracery and heightened with gold in the pure Art Nouveau style of the period.

Remarkable high-quality enamelwork, thick glaze, with subtle pretty color nuances, from this famous master glassmaker of the late 19th century.

Beautiful height of 26 cm with a generous volume, a circumference of up to 35 cm at its widest bulge!

A rare example with this magnificent orchid decoration, truly very lightly produced and therefore highly sought after by collectors, which on this lovely model has nothing to envy from other great names in late 19th-century glassmaking such as Émile Gallé or Daum Nancy.

Rare model called « Calcutta » produced with the famous "Vert Antique" deposited by Legras & Cie, perfectly referenced in the famous Legras Maître Verrier catalog raisonné.

In very good condition for its great age (vase over 135 years old) with a well fresh and thick glaze and vivid colors. Noted is only a discreet small firing flaw/air bubble behind the vase, see photo 11, evidence of the artisan manufacturing techniques of the period, with no impact on the overall aesthetics of this magnificent piece.

A collectible piece full of charm, a true glass tableau where matter, light and enamel meet harmoniously to give rise to the silent poetry of a wonderful bouquet of wild orchids, which will not fail to embellish an interior and to arouse the admiration of French Art Nouveau glass enthusiasts from the early 20th century school of Nancy. Daum Nancy, Gallé, Le verre Français, Schneider, Lalique...
