Description from the seller
Natural Sea Sponge (Spongia officinalis) – Greece
A beautiful natural sea sponge, identified as Spongia officinalis, collected from the coastal waters of Greece.
This specimen forms a large, dense and highly irregular mass with a richly folded surface, deep cavities and numerous branching channels. Its complex porous structure creates a strong sculptural presence, with every side revealing a different arrangement of lobes, openings and natural textures.
The sponge displays warm natural tones ranging from pale yellow and cream to soft honey-beige, with subtle darker inclusions and tonal variations that emphasize its authentic marine origin.
Its soft, fibrous texture and intricate organic architecture are characteristic of natural bath sponges, while the substantial size and unusual form make this example particularly attractive as a decorative natural history specimen.
A striking piece suitable for a marine collection, cabinet of curiosities, educational display or refined interior decoration.
