Table service (2) - Wood - France

An exceptionally beautiful and rare matching 2-piece crumb tray (ramasse-miettes) and brush set from the French Napoleon III period (circa 1870–1880).
Crafted in the highly sought-after European Chinoiserie style, the set features a deep burgundy-red lacquer background adorned with beautifully detailed, raised gilt imagery of oriental figures, traditional landscapes, and floral patterns.
The shell-shaped crumb tray is made of traditional carton bouilli (molded and lacquered paper pulp/papier-mâché), which is very light yet incredibly durable. The curved wooden/papier-mâché brush matches the tray's contours perfectly and still retains its original, tight bristle package.
Condition:
The set is in beautiful antique condition. The red lacquer has a wonderful, deep coloration, and the golden figures on both pieces are highly vivid and intact. It shows minor, expected age-appropriate wear to the edges and back, adding true historical character.
Important Preservation Note:
The entire set has been meticulously cleaned and professionally preserved using Renaissance Wax (the acid-free, micro-crystalline polish developed by the British Museum). This treatment has successfully nourished and revived the original 19th-century lacquer, bringing out the rich red tones and golden contrast, while establishing an invisible, glass-hard protective barrier against future moisture, dust, and handling.
