French Baroque carved wood Putti dating from the 17th/18th century, with original gilding and polychromy, measuring 39 cm high, 25 cm wide and 25 cm deep, in good condition and unsigned.
Description from the seller
Description
A highly decorative French Baroque flying angel or putto, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century.
The figure is finely carved in wood and retains extensive areas of its original gilding and polychromy. The dynamic pose, expressive facial features, flowing drapery and strongly modelled body are characteristic of French Baroque ecclesiastical sculpture of the period.
Originally made as part of a larger church, chapel or altar decoration, the angel was intended to be viewed in a suspended or elevated position, which explains the dramatic floating posture.
The surface displays a particularly attractive historic patina, with natural wear, craquelure, losses and abrasions consistent with its age. These traces of time contribute greatly to the authentic character of the object.
One wing has been restored. Further age-related wear and minor losses are visible, particularly to the extremities and polychrome surface. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition report.
