Natural star sapphire rough – Blue-gray color zoning with a fascinating light effect - 47.60 ct, from Kenya- 9.52 g

This extraordinary Star Sapphire presents itself as a largely natural rough stone with a distinctive, almost hexagonal basic shape. Its coloring ranges from cool blue-gray, dove blue, to slightly violet-gray nuances, with varying light transmission giving the piece an amazing optical depth.

Already under normal lighting, numerous fine structures, growth zones, and natural inclusions can be seen inside. The surface still clearly shows the original character of the crystal. Small matrix remnants and mineral adherents along the edge areas form an appealing contrast to the blue-glimmering corundum.

The appearance changes especially impressively under strong point lighting or transmitted light. Then the previously rather muted blues seem to come alive, reaching in places into an intense, luminous sky blue and royal blue. At the same time, the different inner zones become visible, giving the crystal an almost spatial effect.

The designation Star Sapphire refers to the so-called asterism, an optical effect that can be created by finely aligned needle-shaped inclusions in corundum. With material oriented accordingly and especially after a suitable cabochon cut, a star-shaped light glow can appear under a point light source. In particular, rough material with such internal structures is mineralogically and lapidarily especially interesting.

Metaphysically, sapphire is traditionally associated with mental clarity, concentration, and inner calm. Star Sapphires are also frequently attributed protective and guiding symbolism.

A characterful collectible piece, fascinating especially through the contrast between its restrained blue-gray appearance and the intense blue luminescence under targeted illumination.
