What the blog "En Mode Fashion.com" says about Studio Harcourt
This year, the famous Studio Harcourt celebrates its 75th anniversary. An exceptional longevity for a photo studio.
A book and an exhibition thus pay tribute to this place that occupies a unique position in the French collective imagination.
Indeed, everyone has, at some point, heard of Studio Harcourt or had the opportunity to admire one of the famous black-and-white portraits that define the Studio’s brand.
"In France, you are not an actor unless you have been photographed by Studio Harcourt", Roland Barthes once said.
As Françoise Denoyelle explains: "Presenting the history of Harcourt is to reconstruct the history of a studio in the 20th century within the broader context of photography and the evolution of our society. How did we move from craft to industry, from private commissions to the art market? What roles did the State and the various successors play? How did the myth settle in? Why so much interest in a type of portrait that is historically dated and became kitsch? (...) This work is that of a historian who contributes to the history of photography. (... ) But above all, this book is a tribute to the photographers who worked at the studio and photographed the stars."
In Françoise Denoyelle’s book, one learns, for example, that the famous Studio Harcourt signature that appears on each of the Studio’s photos is actually a reproduction of Cosette Harcourt’s signature when she signed the studio’s ownership deed with her name...
Thus, the history of the Studio is revealed from the end of the Roaring Twenties to its current renewal. The book is of course richly illustrated with some of the studio’s most famous portraits: from Brigitte Bardot to Carole Bouquet, including John Galliano or Ali Mahdavi."
