Description from the seller
The Mec 16 SB is a compact subminiature camera for 16mm film. The camera records 10 × 14 mm images on special film cassettes and was produced from 1960 onward by Feinwerktechnik GmbH in Lahr, Germany.
The Mec 16 SB is an improved version of the Mec 16. The main difference is the built-in Gossen light meter, an early TTL (Through The Lens) light metering system with a selenium cell. In addition, the SB version is equipped with a different lens: a Rodenstock Heligon 22 mm f/2, with aperture settings from f/2 to f/16, making it brighter than the original Mec 16. Various filters for the lens can be placed in the sliding opening.
The focal-plane shutter offers shutter speeds of B (flash), 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500 and 1/1000 second. The camera is synchronized for flash bulbs at 1/30 second and for electronic flash at 1/60 second. The shutter release is threaded to accept a cable release. The film is transported from one cassette to a second (supplied) cassette.
The left side of the camera can be pulled out, revealing the lens and the inverted Galilean viewfinder. On the outer glass of the viewfinder there are two sets of frame lines. One set is intended for subjects at a distance of about 1.5 meters or more. The second, dotted set is for subjects from about 75 cm. The minimum focusing distance is approximately 30 cm. The wrist strap can be detached and used to measure a distance of 30 cm. At the bottom there is a standard 1/4-inch tripod mount.
The camera measures 102 × 58 × 35 mm and weighs about 268 grams. The Mec 16 SB has a brushed aluminum body with black leatherette. Thanks to the high-quality optics and the innovative light metering for its time, the Mec 16 SB stood out in the post-war market for subminiature cameras. The model was especially attractive to enthusiasts seeking a small, portable camera without making many concessions in image quality.
