A large cobalt blue blown glass vase in the Art Nouveau style, model “Thionville,” decorated with polychrome enamels of butterflies and grasses with gilt highlights, attributed to François-Théodore Legras of Verrerie de Saint-Denis / Montjoye, dating from circa 1900–1910, height 35.5 cm, base diameter 15 cm, top diameter 12 cm, weight 992 g, in good condition with minor wear to the decoration and gilding.
Description from the seller
François-Théodore Legras - Verrerie de Saint-Denis / Montjoye, circa 1900. (Attributed to)
Grand vase in cobalt blue blown glass, with polychrome enamel decoration of butterflies and grasses, enhanced with gold.
Model of the vase « Thionville »
Height 35.5 cm
Base diameter: 15 cm
Neck diameter: 12 cm
Weight: 992 g
* cobalt blue glass, very intense, mass-colored;
* tall conical form, with a broadly flared neck (model « Thionville »)
* naturalistic decoration of butterflies and vegetation; the main butterfly is treated with rather thick enamels, with yellow/white wings and brown veins painted. The small butterflies are executed in the same spirit. The vegetal decoration consists of large grasses/reed-like stems, with small gilded floral motifs. One finds exactly what is expected from a naturalistic Art Nouveau Saint-Denis decor: fauna + flora + cobalt blue + polychrome enameling + gilding
* polychrome enamels quite thick, giving real visual relief to the motif, with gilded/silvery highlights
* The bottom of the vase shows a pontil trace / blowpipe cane at the center, tied to the artisanal glasswork
* a thick, blown glass, with irregularities that appear perfectly compatible with artisanal production of the late 19th / early 20th century
As with much production of Legras / Verrerie Saint-Denis / Montjoye from this period, the vase is unsigned, but the overall analysis of the vase allows us to attribute it to the production of François Theodore Legras within a period between 1895 and 1910
Although it is over a century old, the vase is in very good condition (no chips, nicks, or cracks… just a few normal signs of wear to the decoration and gilding on the neck)
Carefully packed for shipping!
