Antik Ushak Suzani Kelim from Turkey, made of wool on cotton, 258 cm by 193 cm, dating to the late 20th century, professionally cleaned and in good overall condition.
Description from the seller
Ancient Oushak kilims (often written Ushak) originate from the region of the same name in western Turkey (Anatolia), which since the 15th century has been one of the world's most important centers of rug weaving art.
Characteristics and style
An Oushak kilim is characterized by its flatweave technique, which makes it thinner and often more versatile than knotted carpets. The design is defined by:
Generous patterns: Typically expansive, geometric or stylized floral medallions and borders.
Color: They are famous for their soft, often pastel tones such as terracotta, cream, cinnamon, and faded blue, produced by natural plant-based dyes.
Suzani influence: If you use the term “Suzani” (or Suzani), this often points to a combination of techniques. Originally, suzanis are embroidered textiles from Central Asia. A rug in Suzani style combines the flatwoven base with fine, often circular embroidery (“sun” or “wheel”), which gives the carpet a particularly detailed texture.
Significance for collectors
Antique pieces from the late 19th or early 20th century are today sought after as luxurious design objects. They harmonize especially well with modern, minimalist interiors due to their typically lighter color palette, while bringing historical depth to the room.
An antique Oushak kilim is not only a floor covering but a handwoven piece of cultural history that gains character over the decades through the natural aging of wool and dyes (the so-called abrash shading).
