Description from the seller
Rare Group of large Neapolitan Nativity shepherds (composed of 6 elements) - Bottega Ferrigno, Naples (Vintage 1960s/1980s) The Craftsmanship Excellence of Spaccanapoli
I propose for sale a group of Neapolitan nativity shepherds of very high quality, named "scenes of popular life", coming from a private inheritance. These six pieces were made by master Ferrigno, a living icon and historic figure of the Nativity art of Via San Gregorio Armeno (Spaccanapoli), Naples. They are true museum-quality objects: Neapolitan nativity figures with heads and hands hand-painted in polychrome original and shoes, with layers of original clothing in very vivid colors (costume, blouse, apron, laces, etc.
Bottega Ferrigno, whose art is renowned worldwide and whose modern pieces continue to be sold at high prices. The group is composed of 6 essential elements: Ordinary people in everyday life, to a large extent.
The structural core is made of straw or wood (flax mannequin and wire), with head, hands and feet covered in finely molded terracotta. Each figure is decorated and hand-painted entirely. A distinctive and fundamental detail is the presence of the artist's hands in painting with professional experience also the eyes, which give the shepherds a realistic, intense and almost lifelike gaze. These are not mass-produced pieces. As industry experts note, this is a non-serial manufacture, adding significant collectible value.
The shepherds date from the 1960s/1980s but with Ancient Original Garments. An exceptionally rare element is the preservation of the original clothes with which they were created. The clothes reproduce fabrics and drapery in an antique/seventeenth-century style, crafted with sartorial care and precious materials. These clothing details are not present in Ferrigno's current productions, making this group historical and rare. The condition is good, as the shepherds have been displayed but kept with care.
The shepherds are ready to be placed on a wooden pedestal or directly in a display case, cabinet, fireplace, table or console. Their sizes are ideal to enhance any environment, creating a focal point of great prestige and artistic value; exactly as in the individual photos in sequence, the measurements are about cm. 32x6x8 - 23x14x11 - 34x11.5x8 - 31x14x13 - 34x14x7 - 31x15x12-.
Packing will be handled with maximum care and professionalism, using protective materials specific for fragile and art-valued objects. Shipping will be carried out through a well-known and reliable courier, with tracked and insured service for the entire value of your precious purchase, ensuring maximum safety
I would like to point out that this splendid set of shepherds, handmade throughout, is characterized by extraordinary attention to detail in the clothing. The garments, handcrafted, feature deliberate imperfections, stains and small tears: this is a deliberate aesthetic choice, aimed at giving the characters that lived-in realism and authentic typical of the highest presepe tradition.
The works show the signs of time that attest to their era and originality. Although the preservation reflects natural aging of materials, the overall integrity remains intact. For those who desire crisper rendering, the fabrics lend themselves to a delicate superficial cleaning, which would revive the colors without compromising the historical charm of the pieces.
