More information about Hereke carpets ,
The coastal town of Hereke lies near Istanbul on the northern edge of the Izmit Bay. Hereke has been a unique weaving center since 1843, when the Ottoman emperor Sultan Abdulmecid established the imperial Hereke factory. Originally, Hereke carpets were produced exclusively for the aristocracy of the Ottoman Empire and offered as gifts for visiting heads of state and royal palaces. Only in 1890 were the carpets made available to the public. Today, Hereke carpets are highly sought-after collectibles. Hereke carpets represent the pinnacle of Turkish weaving tradition, and the best of all Turkish hand-knotted carpets are produced here. The carpets are knotted with the Turkish knot (symmetrical knot) twice and are woven either exclusively with a silk warp and a silk pile or with wool and cotton. In Hereke carpets, only the finest raw materials are used, and the silk used comes from the city of Bursa. Hereke carpet designs are inspired by traditional Turkish as well as curved Persian motifs and typically feature detailed depictions of flowers, birds, mihrabs (prayer niches), and the Tree of Life. The color palette is wide and harmonious, with ivory tones, dark blue, red, yellow, and green used in the carpets. To this day, some of the world’s finest silk carpets are produced in Hereke.
