More info about Hereke carpets,
The coastal town of Hereke lies near Istanbul on the northern edge of the Sea of Izmit. Hereke has been a unique weaving center since 1843, when the Ottoman Emperor Abdulmecid founded the imperial Hereke factory. Originally, Hereke carpets were produced exclusively for the aristocracy of the Ottoman Empire and offered as gifts for visits by heads of state and royal palaces. Only in 1890 were the carpets opened to the public. Today, Hereke carpets are highly sought-after collectibles. Hereke carpets represent the pinnacle of Turkish weaving tradition, and the finest Turkish hand-knotted carpets are made here. The carpets are knotted with the Turkish knot (symmetrical knot) twice and woven either exclusively with a silk warp and silk pile or with wool and cotton. In Hereke carpets only the best raw materials are used, and the silk used comes from Bursa. Hereke carpet designs are inspired by traditional Turkish as well as curling, Persian rug motifs and typically feature detailed depictions of flowers, birds, mihrabs (prayer niches), and the Tree of Life. The color palette is broad and harmonious, with ivory tones, dark blue, red, yellow, and green used in the carpets. To this day, some of the world’s best silk carpets are produced in Hereke.
