Description from the seller
Fossil tooth belonging to the gigantic prehistoric shark Otodus megalodon, the largest marine species ever to exist. This tooth measures 130 mm in length and was found along the coast of North Carolina, one of the most renowned places for recovering well-preserved megalodon remains. The surface has been polished, highlighting the veins and the color transitions between root and enamel.
The Megalodon lived between about 23 and 3.6 million years ago, during the Miocene and the Pliocene, reaching estimated lengths of up to 20 meters. Its triangular, serrated, and robust teeth were designed to smash the bones of whales and large cetaceans, which it fed on. These teeth were arranged in five rows and were continually replaced during the animal's life.
This tooth features a compact and well-preserved root, with enamel partially intact and areas of mineralization that tell the fossilization process. The polishing enhances its tones between black, gray and brownish touches, making it perfect for both museum display and private collections or cabinets of curiosities.
