Description from the seller
Mascot depicts a seated donkey, captured in a seated pose on a base of black-veined beige marble.
Work by Maurice Frécourt 1890/1961 who liked to infuse personality into his animal subjects. The anatomical details, notably the long expressive ears held upright and the mane finely chiselled, reveal the artist's craftsmanship.
The sculpture in ferrous metal presents a silvery finish. Surface wear reveals a contrasting patina that emphasizes the volumes of the musculature and the movement of the animal.
This piece was originally designed as an automobile mascot (radiator cap), a luxury accessory highly prized in the Art Deco era to adorn the grilles of cars. It was then fixed to its marble base to be transformed into a paperweight.
Year 1920. Height 13 cm
Base 11 cm x 8 cm
