Description from the seller
Nine-form panel Russian icon, fitted with biblical and hagiographic scenes, painted in tempera on a wooden panel, dating from the 19th to the 20th century, divided into panels or medallions arranged over three tiers. The work shows various signs of wear, pigment loss, and conservation defects typical of the period.
Upper Register (Marian and Christological Scenes)
Left Panel: The Mother of God of the Sign (Znamenie). The Virgin is depicted frontally with hands raised in prayer (orante); on her chest is a medallion containing Christ Emmanuel who blesses.
Central Panel: Resurrection / Descent into Hell. Jesus, at the center, shines forth and treads the broken doors of Hades, extending his hands to Adam and Eve to bring them out of the sepulchers.
Right Panel: The Mother of God of Kazan. One of the most venerated Marian images in Russia, characterized by the Virgin’s face leaning toward the Child Jesus, who is depicted standing, frontal, in the act of blessing with the right hand.
Central Register (The Saints and Fathers of the Church)
This register is devoted to the veneration of the saints and celestial protectors of the Orthodox Church, recognizable by liturgical and monastic vestments:
Left Panel: A group of thaumaturgic saints, ascetics or local Russian martyrs in a standing position.
Central Panel: Abraham’s Hospitality (Ancient Testament Trinity). The three angels are depicted seated at the meal beneath the Mamre oak, prefiguring the mystery of the Trinity.
Right Panel: A second group of saints and Fathers of the Orthodox Church gathered in collective prayer.
Lower Register (The Military Saints and Intercessors)
Left Panel: Saint George slaying the dragon (or another Holy Knight, such as Saint Demetrius or Saint Theodore). The warrior saint is shown on horseback as he pierces the monster with a spear, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
Central Panel: A group of holy martyrs or celestial protectors (among whom female figures with the typical headdress or map can be distinguished).
Right Panel: Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (or a saint warrior/martyr in prayer). The figure wears sacred vestments and holds the Gospel book in the left hand while blessing the faithful with the right.
