Ancient crucifix in folk art style, characterized by a hand-carved and polychrome figure of Jesus Christ.
This type of craftsmanship and the simple, expressive stylistic traits are typical of traditional sacred art of the 19th century, with strong stylistic analogies found in Spanish colonial production or in continental European works.
The body (Corpus Christi) is carved from wood, finished with polychrome pigments to simulate the anatomical details and the marks of the Passion.
The cross features a dark finish, or ebonized. The cartouche at the top bears the inscription INRI, the Latin acronym for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews).
