Michael II secured the throne after violent succession and, with Theophilus, upheld imperial iconoclasm amid civil war and maritime losses. Under John I Tzimiskes, renewed military success accompanied anonymous folles that replaced the ruler’s portrait with Christ. Their continuation under Nicephorus III Botaniates, amid rebellion and territorial decline, links these issues to shifting ideas of sacred and imperial authority.
