Description from the seller

VOC – Fine lot of 9 colonial duiten | 5 provinces | 18th century | all different

Beautiful and historic lot of 9 original colonial VOC duiten, struck in the 18th century for use in the trade of the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
The lot comprises 5 different provinces, making this a varied and attractive assortment for both the collector and the enthusiast of colonial history.

Composition
- Holland: 1734, 1744 and 1767
- West Friesland: 1752
- Zeeland: 1756 and 1791
- Gelderland: 1731
- Utrecht: 1787 and 1789

Historical context:
In the period 1594–1602 several so-called companies engaged in distant trade with Asia. This rivalry pressed profits, prompting the States-General to establish a single central trading organization.
Thus, in 1602 the United East India Company (VOC) was formed, receiving exclusive rights to trade between the Netherlands and Asia. The VOC remained active until 1799.
In trade, Spanish reales (also known as Spanish dollars) were initially widely used, and were even counterfeited in Dutch towns such as Dordrecht and Middelburg. Later, the VOC also used high-value Dutch gold and silver coins, such as gold ducats and silver leeuwendaalders, rijders, and rijksdaalders.
Because of a structural shortage of small change, duiten were shipped to Asia from 1724. These duiten had twice the value there compared to the Netherlands, which led to large-scale illicit export. To counter this, a special VOC-type duit was introduced, declared the only officially legal tender.

Distinctive features of these VOC duiten:
- Obverse: VOC monogram with year
- Reverse: the province coat of arms, usually without inscription
- First issue of this type: 1726

Condition
- Coins in mixed condition (as found)
- With natural wear, patina, and signs of use appropriate for their age
- Please review the photos carefully for your own assessment
