Concept

We all wear masks.

In The Mask, before the legendary mask becomes an instrument of transformation, the film introduces the idea through the story of Loki, the god associated with mischief, transformation and shifting identities.

But perhaps the most interesting thing about a mask isn't what it hides.

It's what it allows us to become.

We wear masks every day.
Social masks. Professional masks. Masks we put on to protect ourselves, to fit in, to hide something, or sometimes simply to dare to express a part of ourselves that we normally keep hidden.

The mask doesn't necessarily conceal our true identity.

Sometimes, it reveals another one.

For this piece, I reconstructed the iconic mask of The Mask entirely from original 35mm film taken from the movie itself.

The object becomes a kind of paradox:
the film that tells the story of the mask becomes the mask.

And when light passes through the film, the images hidden within it appear.

The mask is no longer just an object from a movie.
It becomes an object about cinema, identity, transformation… and perhaps about all the masks we choose to wear.
