Meissen porcelain Ajour reticulated bowl with five floral cartouches, circa 1880, in excellent condition, Ø 22.8 cm × H 6.5 cm, weight 541 g, with hand-painted polychrome flowers, insects and gold decoration.
Description from the seller
Antique Meissen Ajour Bowl – hand-painted flowers & insects – ca. 1880
A particularly beautiful antique Meissen Ajour bowl, manufactured by the famous German Staatliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen. A refined piece of porcelain art where openwork craftsmanship, floral painting, and rich gilding come together wonderfully.
The bowl features a complex openwork, woven ajour edge and five raised cartouches. Each cartouche is individually decorated with a colorful bouquet of flowers. The central section shows a rich polychrome floral arrangement, complemented by finely painted insects and butterflies.
The openwork rim is accentuated by numerous hand-painted gold lines and ornaments. The scalloped outer rim and the cartouches are also richly gilded. The combination of white porcelain, vibrant floral painting, and gold gives the bowl its distinctly elegant character.
A virtually identical Meissen bowl is described as a reticulated and fluted bowl with central flower bouquet and insects and dated around 1880. This comparison piece also has five floral cartouches and nearly the same dimensions.
On the underside is the characteristic crossed-swords mark in cobalt blue underglaze by Meissen. The execution of the mark falls within the historical mark variants used by Meissen in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
A specific individual designer or modeller cannot be reliably established for this variation and is therefore intentionally not attributed. No specific model number is established on the offered piece either.
On 1stDibs a recently sold piece shows the photo. The virtually identical bowl sold for $1,200.
The bowl, given its considerable age, is in very fine condition. Please review the photos carefully; they form an integral part of the description and show the painting, ajour workmanship, gilding, and condition in detail.
