Description from the seller
Rare and fascinating historical map of Italy, titled "L'ITALIE divisée selon ses differents Etats qui la partagent". It was drawn and engraved by the celebrated French cartographer Nicolas Bailleul (1714–1782), known as Bailleul le jeune, and published in Lyon by the publisher Jean-Baptiste Daudet (1738–1819) in 1762.
The work offers a meticulous geopolitical panorama of the peninsula in the eighteenth century, accurately highlighting the borders of the individual Duchies, Republics and Kingdoms of the era.
The composition is distinguished by the splendid Baroque cartouche in the upper right, supported by putti and cherubs, which encloses the editorial data and the original dating. The outer margins are richly ornamented with the colored heraldic coats of arms of the principal ruling families and Italian territories, including Mantua, Parma, Modena and Genoa, while the interior of the sheet is adorned with a partial hand watercoloring of the geographical boundaries. It is a collectible piece strongly scenographic and of great historical importance for enthusiasts of eighteenth-century cartography.
