Description from the seller
Important and detailed historical geographic map of northern Italy and the Alps, entitled "LES FRONTIERES D'ALLEMAGNE ET D'ITALIE...". This superb copper-engraved plate was produced in Paris by the renowned royal geographer Nicolas de Fer (1646–1720) and published in 1701 to illustrate the military movements and the complex geopolitical events connected with the Duchy of Milan during the War of the Spanish Succession.
The map extends its precious cartographic view over the entire Po Valley and the Alpine area, accurately covering the territories of the Republic of Venice, the Duchies of Milan, Mantua, Modena, Parma and Piacenza, reaching north to Tyrol, the Valtellina, the Grisons, and Lake Constance. The composition is enriched in the upper left corner by a monumental Baroque cartouche shaped like a stone monument, finely engraved and bearing the full title and the graphic scales of the work. The administrative boundaries of the various states of the time are underlined by a contemporaneous hand wash, which gives the sheet exceptional historical and decorative value. A collectible piece of great charm and rarity, ideal for collectors of military and regional cartography of the eighteenth century.
