Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD).
Sestertius (Bronze, 38.5 mm, 23.5 g).
Obv: M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXVI. Laureate head right.
Rev: IMP VI COS III S-C. Roma seated left on cuirass, holding spear and leaning on shield.
Reference: RIC III 1037.
Marcus Aurelius ruled during the height of the Roman Empire but faced repeated wars, plague and frontier pressure. Known as a Stoic philosopher, he wrote the *Meditations* while campaigning along the Danube. His reign combined intellectual distinction with prolonged military struggle, especially against Germanic tribes, and marked the beginning of a more troubled era after the relative stability of the earlier Antonine emperors.
