PLAN VON DER BELAGERUNG OSTENDE Ao 1706, a non-coloured copperplate map of the siege of Ostend (1706) by Peter Fehr (1684–1742), published in Frankfurt am Main in 1718 within Theatrum Europaeum; Belgium, Western Flanders, Ostend, 34 × 42 cm, excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Rare and interesting historical military and naval plant of the siege of Ostend, literally titled "PLAN VON DER BELAGERUNG OSTENDE Ao 1706". This magnificent copper-engraved plate was executed by the renowned German artist and engraver Peter Fehr (1684–1742), whose signature "P. Fehr sculp." is clearly visible at the base of the editorial cartouche, and published in Frankfurt am Main in 1718 within the famous contemporary historical chronicle Theatrum Europaeum.
The map offers an accurate topographic and strategic reconstruction of the siege carried out by the allied troops in June 1706 during the War of the Spanish Succession. The upper part describes the North Sea bay swarmed with imposing warships and vessels lined up for the naval blockade, while the inland Flemish region shows the dense network of drainage canals, swamps, and fortress-bastion lines that surrounded the city’s urban core. In the lower center stands a sober and elegant geometric cartouche in the shape of a stone tablet containing the title in German. Printed on contemporaneous laid paper of the era, this sheet represents a document of great historical and collectible value, ideal for enthusiasts of fortification iconography and 18th-century military history.
Dimensions 34 x 42 cm
