Antique Sterling silver double stamp box – Levi & Salaman – Birmingham 1897
A remarkable antique sterling silver stamp box (Double Stamp Box) from the Victorian era, manufactured in Birmingham in 1897.
The box features an attractive half-cylinder shape and stands on four elegant scroll feet. The top is equipped with two separate viewing windows for stamps. Inside there are two compartments.
The silver hallmarks are clearly present:
Sterling silver – 925 silver content
Walking Lion – Sterling silver
Anchor – Birmingham assay office
Date letter X – 1897
Master mark L & S – Levi & Salaman
Levi & Salaman was a well-known silversmith from Birmingham, founded in 1870 by Phineas Harris Levi and Joseph Wolfe Salaman. The company was known, among other things, for the manufacture of small silver utilitarian and decorative objects.
