Belgium - Military medal - Order of the Crown - Commander’s Cross with Neck Ribbon - J. Fonson - Original Case

Belgian Order of the Crown (Ordre de la Couronne / Kroonorde) – Commander’s Cross, complete with its original neck ribbon and fitted presentation case by the renowned Belgian manufacturer J. Fonson, Brussels.

The decoration consists of a white-enamelled five-pointed Maltese-style cross with gilt rays between the arms. The central blue enamel medallion bears the Belgian royal crown. The reverse displays the royal monogram on blue enamel. Above the cross is the characteristic green-enamelled laurel wreath suspension.

The Commander grade was intended to be worn around the neck, hence the original broad burgundy/red neck ribbon accompanying this example.

The decoration comes in its original burgundy presentation case, decorated with a gilt Belgian royal crown. The cream-coloured silk lining is clearly marked:
“J. Fonson – Bruxelles”

J. Fonson was an important Brussels manufacturer and supplier of Belgian orders, medals and insignia.
Condition: very good overall vintage condition. The enamels are attractive and well preserved, with normal traces of age and handling to the gilt metal. The original ribbon is present and shows some age-related wear/fraying. The fitted case is complete and functional, with visible external wear, scratches and small marks consistent with age. The interior also shows some signs of age.

A particularly attractive and complete example of a Belgian Commander’s Cross of the Order of the Crown, made more desirable by the presence of its original J. Fonson presentation case and neck ribbon.
