Description from the seller

Great wounded lion with arrows – after Charles Valton – plaster sculpture with bronze patina – 20th century

Great wounded lion with arrows – after Charles Valton

Important animal sculpture representing a lion in full action, wounded by two arrows, in a composition that is particularly expressive and dynamic. The sculpture presents a highly detailed representation of the felid: tensed musculature, opened jaws, visible fangs, body movement, and a substantial mane carefully worked. The work is made in molded plaster with a finish/patina imitating gilded bronze, giving the whole piece the characteristic appearance of an ancient bronze sculpture.

The composition shows strong similarities with the animal models by Charles Valton (1851–1918) devoted to felines wounded by arrows. Bronze versions of this composition are known on the art market, while patinated plaster versions “after Charles Valton” are also documented. The present sculpture, however, bears no apparent signature of Charles Valton and is offered as a work made after the artist’s model, not as an original signed by Charles Valton.

Subject: wounded lion with arrows
Artist/model: after Charles Valton (1851–1918)
Material: molded plaster
Finish: patina/paint to imitate gilded bronze
Arrows: two removable metal elements in steel
Dimensions: 60 cm in length × 42 cm in height × 17 cm in depth
Base: 60 × 17 × 11 cm
Weight: 7.25 kg
Signature: no apparent signature

Ancient condition showing signs of wear, small chips, loss of finish, and age- and handling-related marks, visible in the photographs.
The patina naturally presents variations, areas of wear, and some traces of oxidation/matured appearance giving the sculpture its antique character.

The two arrows are removable and can be taken out and reinserted.

The photographs are an integral part of the description of the condition.

The photographs feature a background replaced using artificial intelligence in order to showcase the work. The object itself has undergone no digital modification: its shape, its proportions, its colors, its patina, its materials, its wear, its chips, its defects, and the two arrows are represented as they really are on the object.
