Description from the seller
Switzerland - Canton of Valais / Diocese of Sion - 1/2 Batzen 1722
Switzerland - Sion (Valais) - 1/2 Batzen 1722 - Franz Joseph Supersaxo - Magnificent Quality (Very Fine / Gorgeous)
An exceptionally well-preserved specimen of a rare 1/2 Batzen from 1722, struck under the reign of Prince-Bishop Franz Joseph Supersaxo (1701–1734) for the **Prince-Bishopric of Sion** (Canton Valais, Switzerland).
This specific cantonal type is extraordinarily difficult to find in this condition. Whereas these issues are often heavily worn, corroded or with weak strikes, this specimen shows a superb sharp relief and a deep, attractive historical patina.
Country/Issuing authority: Prince-Bishopric of Sion (Sitten / Canton de Valais), Switzerland.
Nominal value: 1/2 Batzen (2 Kreuzer).
Year: 1722 (Fully and very clearly legible centered on both sides of the shield: '17' - '22').
* **Mint/master:** Franz Joseph Supersaxo.
* **Material:** Billon (silver alloy).
* **Quality grade:** **Very Fine+ / Gorgeous (ZF/PR)**.
* *Obverse:* The coat of arms of Valais with the characteristic 7 stars has an exceptionally high relief. Both the double eagle above and the full legend `REP. VALLESY PRÆ. ET COM.` are microscope-clean and free of significant wear and legible.
* *Reverse:* The detailed four-part family crest of Supersaxo is superbly preserved. The bishop's mitre on top and the crossing staffs are razor-sharp. The legend `F. I. SVPER SAXO EP. SI.` (Franz Joseph Supersaxo Episcopus Sedunensis) is fully intact and clear.
* **Notes:** No deep scratches, dents or obstructive edge damage. An honest, uncleaned coin with fantastic historical character and a sharpness that makes this coin an absolute asset for the discerning collector of Swiss cantonal coins.
