Authentic Chinese name seal (chop seal) carved from two-tone Shoushan soapstone, dating to 1930–1940, weighing 109 g and measuring 7.7 × 2.5 × 2.5 cm, with a Pixiu top sculpture, two-tone colophon, and visible traditional red seal surface.
Description from the seller
Authentic and historically documented Chinese name seal (chop seal) crafted from two-tone Shoushan stone. The object has been superbly hand-carved, with the craftsman leveraging the stone’s natural dark vein to shape the sculpture of the foo lion (Pixiu/Bixi) on top, while the base retains a warm, yellow-brown hue. This type of sculpture traditionally served as a symbol of protection and good fortune.
The side of the seal features a finely engraved two-tone colophon (signature) in two vertical columns read from right to left. The right column shows the characters 廿七年五月 (Èr shí qī nián wǔ yuè), translated as "27th year, fifth month." In the Chinese Republic (Minguo) calendar, this dates the object precisely to May 1938. The left column states the text 时在□□碧刻 (Shí zài ... Bì kè), meaning "At the time in [Place], carved by Bi," and thus documents the maker and workshop of the artist.
The underside of the seal displays the actual stamp surface with clear traces of the traditional red seal paste. The letters are deeply cut in the classical, labyrinthine large seal script (Dazhuan). The right column begins with the character 張 (the traditional form of 张 – Zhang), the family name of the original owner, followed by the given name.
The object weighs 109 grams and measures 7.7 x 2.5 x 2.5 cm. Given its age, this functional seal remains in a beautiful, authentic condition with a wonderfully patinated surface and minimal age-related wear to the corners, contributing to the historic character of this collectible piece of Asian art from the early twentieth century.
