Chinese Qing-style jewelry/document box made of hardwood and brass, circa 1900

Probably southern China, possibly the Canton region (Guangzhou), where many decorative hardwood items with brass mounts were manufactured for local consumption and export. The box has a rectangular, lightly domed lid shape and is finished with:

• Dark reddish-brown, probably Chinese hardwood; the exact wood cannot be safely determined from the photo (possibly hongmu-like wood, but not guaranteed as such).
• Ornamental brass corner pieces, central hardware, and lock plate.
• Numerous globe-headed brass nails, both decorative and reinforcing.
• Two brass hinges and a lockable front fitting; key missing in the photo.

Waarschijnlijk Zuid-China, mogelijk de regio Kanton (Guangzhou), waar veel decoratieve hardhouten objecten met messing monturen voor lokale afzet en export werden vervaardigd. Het kistje heeft een rechthoekige, licht gewelfde dekselvorm en is afgewerkt met:

• Donker roodbruin, waarschijnlijk Chinees hardhout; het exacte hout is op basis van foto niet veilig vast te stellen (mogelijk hongmu-achtig hout, maar niet als zodanig garanderen).
• Geornamenteerde messing hoekstukken, centraal beslag en slotplaat.
• Talrijke bolkopige messing nagels, zowel decoratief als verstevigend.
• Twee messing scharnieren en een afsluitbaar voorbeslag; sleutel ontbreekt op de foto.
