Description from the seller
Andromeda & the Struggle of Perseus – Archaeological Replica after Joseph Félon (Van Paridon, Paridur)
A beautiful classical statue of Andromeda, cast in the renowned Amsterdam atelier of the Gebroeders van Paridon after the 19th-century masterpiece by the French sculptor Joseph Félon (1818–1896) (signed "J. Félon" on the rock). Félon drew inspiration for this design from one of the most captivating stories of classical Greek mythology.
The Mythological Tale & Classical Archaeology:
In the Greek saga, Andromeda is the daughter of the Ethiopian king Cepheus and Cassiopeia. After her mother boasted to be more beautiful than the sea nymphs, Poseidon sent the sea monster Cetus to ravage the land. Andromeda was bound naked to a rock to serve as a sacrifice to the monster.
Here enters Zeus into the story: the hero Perseus – a son of Zeus (born from the golden rain at Danaë) – saw the chained Andromeda on his return. Armed with the attributes of the gods, this son of Zeus defeated the monster, freed Andromeda, and took her as his bride. Félon depicts Andromeda at the moment of fear and surrender, chained to the rock in anticipation of her fate.
