Description from the seller
A silverplated samovar-style hot water urn, model No. 1984, produced by Meriden Britannia Co. of Connecticut, United States, circa 1900. Meriden Britannia was a major American silverplate manufacturer of the late 19th century and became a founding component of the International Silver Company in 1898; pieces from this period represent the firm's production at its established scale. The urn is formed as a single body mounted on an integrated base with four decorative legs and a central burner chamber at the base; liquid is dispensed through a side faucet. The exterior surface is engraved in a pattern of flowers and foliage in the Aesthetic Movement manner, a decorative vocabulary prevalent in American applied arts from the 1870s through the early 1900s. The underside bears the manufacturer's stamp with the firm's name and model number 1984. Condition: Good. The silver plating shows age-consistent wear overall. Three defects are noted and must be disclosed: the burner or spirit lamp is absent from the lower chamber; there is a dent to the body near the faucet on the left side; and there is a dent on the inner face of the lid. No repairs or restorations are evident. The engraved decoration is retained throughout.
Size: 27 x 30 cm. Maker's marks: the underside is stamped with the Meriden Britannia Co. roundel and the QUADRUPLE (plate) roundel, with the model number below; close-up photos of the marks are included.
